One day in Berlin is not enough to see everything. It is enough to have a very good Berlin day.
The trick is to stop treating the city like a checklist. This route starts early at the Brandenburg Gate, uses Mitte while your legs are fresh, gives Museum Island only the time it deserves, and saves the East Side Gallery for the evening, when Berlin begins to feel less monumental and more alive.
You will cover a lot, but the day still has a rhythm. If this is your first time in Berlin and you have roughly twelve hours, this is the route I would actually follow. | 20:00 | Finish with dinner in Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg rather than returning immediately to the historic centre. |
There are three sensible ways to adapt this day. Keep the route exactly as written if you enjoy walking and exploring independently. Use a guided walking tour if you would rather understand the history than repeatedly stop to read about it. Choose a hop-on hop-off bus if long distances or limited mobility make a full walking day unattractive. And if the weather is clear, the TV Tower can replace some of the unstructured Alexanderplatz time rather than becoming an extra attraction squeezed into an already busy schedule.
The TV Tower is the one paid stop on this route I would decide before the day begins.
